What determines the cost of a hair transplant, and what it includes

The cost of a hair transplant depends on the follicular units you need, your donor area, the areas to be treated and the days and phases involved. Dr. Couto sets the number of units in your assessment; the amount comes afterwards.

That is why there are no prices on this page: they depend on a number of units that only an assessment of your case can set. What you will find here is what you pay for in a well-performed hair transplant, and why.

What drives the cost

Five variables that explain the cost of a hair transplant

The cost of a hair transplant does not come from a price list; it comes from your plan. These are the five variables that explain it:

Which areas, how many units, how many days and whether another phase is needed are all decided in the assessment, with your case in front of us.

  1. How many units. The price is calculated per follicular unit, and Dr. Couto sets how many you need in your assessment.
  2. Your donor area. It determines how many units can be extracted now and how many are worth keeping in reserve in case they are needed later.
  3. Areas to treat. Treating only the front is not the same as treating the front and the crown: each area adds units to the plan.
  4. How many days. Nobody receives more than 1,500 units in a day. If your plan needs more, it is done over consecutive days.
  5. Phases of the plan. If it is better to leave an area for later, it is treated in a later phase, at least 12 months afterwards.

The model

How the price of a hair transplant is calculated

At FUExpert Clinic, the price of a hair transplant is calculated per follicular unit: the amount for your procedure depends on how many units are extracted and placed in your case.

Charging per unit has a consequence worth stating plainly: more units mean a higher amount. That is why it matters so much who decides how many you need.

Who sets the units

At FUExpert Clinic, Dr. Juan Couto decides this in your assessment, on medical grounds: the units your case needs and that your donor area can provide without compromising the future. Sometimes that is fewer than you expected. And if surgery is not right for you, or it is not the right time yet, he tells you and explains why.

So the number of units comes from the assessment, not from a quote. The amount is calculated afterwards, based on that number.

What we protect

Why preserving the donor area matters

The donor area is the reserve every hair transplant draws from, and it is finite: follicular units that are extracted do not grow back there. What is used today will not be available tomorrow if your hair loss progresses and another phase is needed.

That is why part of what you pay for is looking after it. At FUExpert Clinic, this comes down to three decisions:

  • Extracting evenly. Without concentrating many units in the same area, so that the donor area keeps a uniform appearance.
  • Never exceeding 1,500 follicular units per day. It is a limit, not a fixed figure: if your plan needs more, it is spread over consecutive days without exceeding the limit on any of them. For example, 3,000 units over two days or 4,000 over three.
  • Leaving room for the future. If another area is better treated later on, it is kept for a later phase, at least 12 months afterwards.

We explain how the units are extracted in the FUE technique. When the donor area on the scalp is not enough, there are other options, such as a beard hair transplant.

How a plan is split by follicular units

Up to 1,500 follicular units

Day 1

3,000 follicular units

Two consecutive days

Day 2

4,000 follicular units

Three consecutive days

Day 3

Another area, later on

A later phase, at least 12 months afterwards

These are examples of the approach, not a plan. 1,500 is the maximum per day, not what is always placed: the units and days for each case come from its assessment.

Surgeon’s time

How grafts are distributed to achieve natural density

Hair transplant procedure in the operating room at FUExpert Clinic

Natural density does not depend only on how many units are placed, but on where and how. Each unit is placed according to the area, the thickness of the hair and the direction and angle of the hair around it, so that the result blends in with the hair you already have.

That work takes surgeon’s time, and it is part of what you pay for. That is why at FUExpert Clinic the schedule is limited to two patients per day: a limit set for the quality of the work. Dr. Couto leads every procedure.

We explain how each area is approached on separate pages, starting with the hairline, the receding corners and the temples.

The underlying question

Is it worth paying more for a quality hair transplant?

Paying more guarantees nothing in itself. It is worth it when you are paying for judgment, time and follow-up, because donor area that is used up does not regenerate and a result that looks obvious cannot always be corrected.

At FUExpert Clinic, those three things are concrete:

  • Judgment. The units your case needs, set by Dr. Couto in the assessment, and a “no” or a “not yet” when surgery is not right for you.
  • Time. A maximum of 1,500 follicular units per day and two patients per day.
  • Follow-up. Follow-up appointments after the procedure are carried out by Dr. Juan Couto.

Whatever the clinic, ask how much of all that is included in the price before you decide.

And if you have already had a transplant you are not happy with, what can be done depends above all on the donor area you have left: we explain it in Correcting a previous transplant.

What the price covers

What the price of a hair transplant includes

The price of your procedure covers what is done during it and what goes with it.
This is what it includes and what it leaves out:

Included

  • The procedure. Extraction and placement of the follicular units in your plan, in one day or over several consecutive days.
  • Operating room and surgical materials. Everything used on each day.
  • Local anesthesia. Throughout the procedure.
  • Medication for the immediate post-operative period. As prescribed by the clinic for the first few days.
  • First wash at the clinic. 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Care kit and guidelines. For washing your hair at home, with written instructions.
  • Follow-up appointments with Dr. Couto during the first year. Usually at 6 and 12 months.

Cancelling surgery means the operating room and the entire professional team are blocked for that day, with significant financial losses for the clinic. A 10% deposit is required to book the date of your treatment. If you cancel for a justified reason, the deposit will be refunded, provided you cancel no later than 72 hours before the treatment. The deposit is paid after your assessment, either when you book the date or one month before the scheduled day of the procedure. The remaining balance is paid on the day of surgery.

Not included

  • Travel and accommodation. If you come from outside Madrid or from another country, travel and the days of your stay are at your own expense.
  • Medical treatment for hair loss. Medication to slow hair loss in the long term, if prescribed, is charged separately.
  • Complementary treatments. Such as PRP or micropigmentation, if you need them.
  • A later phase. If another area is better treated later on, it is a new procedure, at least 12 months later, with its own quote.

Follow-up appointments after the procedure are carried out by Dr. Juan Couto. We explain what the following days are like in After the procedure and, if you live outside Spain, how follow-up is organized in International patients.

The amount

When you find out what your case will cost

You find out the amount for your hair transplant after your assessment with Dr. Juan Couto, once there is a plan to calculate it on: units, areas, days and, if needed, phases.

If you were looking for FUExpert Clinic’s prices before booking a consultation, this is why they are not here. Without an assessment there is no number of units, and without a number of units there is no amount: any earlier figure would be a guess.

To find out yours, the next step is to request an assessment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the cost of a hair transplant

Not based on that figure. At FUExpert Clinic, the amount is calculated on the number of units Dr. Couto sets in your assessment, and it may not match the number you have been given. If what you want is to check that plan before deciding, ask for a second opinion: it reviews the plan, not the price.

Not necessarily. The density you see depends as much on where and how the units are placed as on how many there are, and every unit comes from a donor area that does not regenerate. That is why Dr. Couto sets the number in your assessment: the number your case needs, taking into account what you may need later on. We explain this in how grafts are distributed.

No. At FUExpert Clinic, the number of follicular units is not adjusted to a budget but to what your case needs. Dr. Juan Couto sets it in your assessment, based on your hair loss and what your donor area can provide. Which areas are treated now and which can wait for a later phase is also decided on medical grounds.

Yes. The price of a hair transplant at FUExpert Clinic does not include travel or accommodation if you come from outside Madrid, long-term medical treatment for hair loss, complementary treatments such as PRP or micropigmentation, or a later phase, which has its own quote. It does include the procedure, care in the immediate post-operative period and follow-up appointments with Dr. Couto during the first year.

FUExpert Clinic does not publish the price because the amount depends on a number of follicular units that can only be set in the assessment. The price is calculated per follicular unit, and how many you need is decided by Dr. Juan Couto with your donor area and your hair loss in front of him. That is why the amount is given after the assessment, based on a specific plan.
